“Cumberland County DA says she is willing to prosecute illegal use of force by ICE agents”

“As Maine communities brace for a possible enforcement surge, Jacqueline Sartoris said in an interview that she’s concerned about use of force by federal agents in Chicago and Minneapolis.”

“My concern is that I believe that ICE agents have been given the impression that they have absolute so-called immunity, and that they seem to be acting with the idea that they are not accountable with violating the law in the various states where they have been acting,” Sartoris said.

“DA office awarded grant to track, test sexual assault kits”

“The nearly $2.5 million three-year federal grant for the project will make it so Maine is no longer the sole state to not inventory any sexual assault kits.”

“This work is worth it, and this work will allow us to say to sex assault victims, ‘We’ve taken your cases seriously. We have investigated and prosecuted wherever we can,’” said Sartoris.

“Cumberland County expands restorative justice efforts”

“Sartoris said her office is trying to expand its restorative justice offerings for victims and defendants, under an agreement the county signed with a community nonprofit, Cumberland County Friends of Restorative Justice.”

“This is not a pat on the head, ‘You poor person, bad things happened in your life, you did a bad thing and now go on,'” Sartoris said. “This gives them the opportunity to put that down, to not go forward thinking of themselves as a bad person. They can think of themselves instead as someone who did a stupid thing, which we all do.”
