“In our criminal justice system, prosecutors hold most of the power to make change. Our choices direct most of what happens following a violation of the law: whether to charge, what to charge, what offers to make, what to request for consequences, and whether to file a dismissal — all of that is up to my office.
“But in all that power is an opportunity to motivate defendants to make positive changes in their lives, reconnect them to their community, and help make victims whole."
“That’s my mission as DA: to use our power more compassionately, but also more effectively, to strengthen our communities and improve public safety at the same time.”
— Jackie
In her first term, Jackie Sartoris implemented common sense, practical reforms to the way we approach criminal justice, and achieved real results.
Created a Sex Crimes Prosecution Team to prioritize these frequently underprosecuted cases, take them to trial, and give victims the justice they deserve.
Won a $2.5 million federal grant to test the backlog of every eligible rape kit, and investigate and prosecute where possible.
Created a new alcohol and drug addiction diversion program to help defendants find their way to recovery.
Developed and expanded a restorative justice program to help defendants accept accountability, restore constructive connections to community, and reduce future criminal conduct.
Identified and began fixing systemic gaps in the Mental Health docket, and instituted changes to help keep both the public, and individuals with acute mental health needs, safer.
Will you donate to help me continue making progress towards more just outcomes & safer communities?
(Unfortunately Maine’s Clean Elections program does not yet include District Attorney candidates, so we have to raise campaign funds the old fashioned way. Maximum donation is $1,050, and every little bit helps. Thank you!)
